The Arizona Sonora Desert Museum
Ranked one of the ‘Top 10 Museums in the country’ by Tripadvisor, the Desert Museum is one of Tucson’s main attractions. It’s equal parts zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, aquarium and natural history museum. 85% of the museum is experienced outdoors, so that visitors can interact with the wildlife and learn firsthand how natural conservation works.
The Saguaro is the nation’s largest cactus, and it is a sight to behold. Luckily for Tucsonans, they are also everywhere! And yet nothing compares to hiking the wilderness and camping in Saguaro National Park. Kids can get involved in Junior Ranger camps and other educational programs, and there are plenty of opportunities for adults to volunteer as well.
One of the world’s most unique research facilities is hiding in plain sight in Tucson, Arizona. Some may remember the Biosphere 2 as the site of privately held experiments conducted by a group of eight scientists in the 1990’s. The facility was recently taken over by the University of Arizona and is now an arena for scientific discovery about the Earth and its living systems. Guests can tour the impressive facility and discover what science has in store for our planet’s future.
This Catholic mission is the oldest intact European structure in Arizona. Founded in 1692 by Father Kino, it is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. While its original function was religious ministry, it is now also open to the public for tourism. Much of the original statuary, artwork and architecture is still in tact. A visit to the mission invites you to step back in time and experience what life might have been like in the 18th century.
